Leituga, língua de vaca, serralha da rocha (Sonchus fruticosus)
Perennial, woody herb, to 4 m, branching from the base. Leaves are long, sinuate and denticulate, arranged in rosettes, 28-67 cm long and 7-18 cm wide. Numerous golden yellow flowers are terminal, fruits (achenes) with feathery appendages (pappi) that waft seeds away on the wind. This endemic is commonly found in Madeira and has been reported for Porto Santo, where it is extremely rare. It grows in evergreen woodland and mountain heath forest, where it appears mainly from 800-1,200 m, since it requires a certain amount of atmospheric moisture. It is not considered endangered.
